Why You’ll Love Our Stand Up Paddle Board Rentals
⭐ Two Minutes From Kamaole Beach Park I
Our Kihei shop is a two-minute walk from Kamaole Beach Park I, one of Maui’s most popular paddleboarding beaches. The calm morning waters, sandy beach entry, and clear reef right across the street make it one of the best SUP launch spots on the island. Pick up your board, walk to the water, and you are paddling within minutes of leaving our shop. No car, no parking, no logistics.
⭐ Wide, Stable Boards That Make Learning Easy
Auntie Snorkel rents premium wide-body SUP boards ranging from 9’6″ to 11′ long and approximately 32″ to 34″ wide. That extra width is the key to making stand up paddle boarding accessible to first-timers. A wider board is dramatically more stable than a narrow one, which means less wobbling, more confidence, and a much better chance of actually standing and paddling on your first session rather than spending it falling in. These are boards we are proud to use ourselves.
⭐ Free Upgrade to a Carbon Fiber Paddle
Every rental includes a free upgrade to a carbon fiber paddle. Carbon paddles are significantly lighter and stiffer than standard aluminum paddles, which makes each stroke more efficient and less tiring. After a morning of paddling, the difference in arm and shoulder fatigue is real and noticeable. It is a detail that makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
⭐ Free Basic Instruction at Pickup
Every guest receives free basic SUP instruction at our Kihei shop before heading out. Our staff cover how to launch safely, how to land without drama, proper paddling technique, and what to do if you fall. The lesson takes just a few minutes and gives you the foundation you need to get on the water with confidence.
⭐ Paddle in the Morning for the Best Conditions
South Maui’s afternoon trade winds can make paddleboarding genuinely challenging, even for experienced paddlers. Morning sessions, before the trades pick up, typically offer calm, glassy water that is ideal for beginners and enjoyable for everyone. We strongly recommend picking up your board in the morning and being on the water by mid-morning at the latest. Our staff will let you know what conditions are looking like on the day you pick up.
⭐ Snorkel the Reef Right Across the Street
The colorful reef across the street from our shop is home to dozens of Hawaiian green sea turtles and a wide variety of tropical fish. Paddle out on your SUP, drop in with your snorkel gear, and you have one of the most complete ocean experiences available on Maui, all within walking distance of our front door.
⭐ 25% Off When You Book Online
Booking ahead through auntiesnorkel.com cuts the standard paddle board rental price by 25%. Reserve your board in advance and it will be ready for you at pickup. Boards sell out regularly. Booking early ensures you get one.
⭐ Delivery Available for Weekly Rentals
Renting for a full week? We offer free delivery to Kihei, Wailea, and Makena for weekly rentals. For rentals of less than one week, delivery is available for $40 per board. Text or call us at (808) 298-3021 after completing your online reservation to arrange a delivery time.

🚗 Transporting Your Paddle Board by Car
Planning to drive your board to a launch spot? Here is everything you need to know before you load up.
🛒 Pick Up Soft Racks and Straps at Our Shop — $9
We rent soft roof rack pads and tie-down straps for $9. These protect your car roof and keep your board secure during transport. Grab them at the shop when you pick up your board.
📋 You’ll Receive a Loading Instruction Sheet With a Diagram
Every guest who transports a board receives a clear, illustrated instruction sheet showing exactly how to position, pad, and strap the board to your roof. Our staff will also talk you through the process verbally at pickup.
✅ Our Staff Will Inspect Your Setup Before You Drive Away
Before you leave our parking lot, a team member will come outside to verify that your boards are properly loaded and the straps are tight and secure.
📌 Key Rules for Safe Board Transport
- 🏄 Fins up. Always load boards fins facing up to protect the fins and the roof of your car.
- 🚗 Two boards maximum per vehicle. Do not attempt to load more than two paddle boards or two surfboards onto one car.
- 📡 Remove your antenna before loading boards. A board shifting during transport can snap an antenna.
- 🟰 Place one pad at the front door frame position and one pad at the rear door frame position. The straps will cross directly over each pad.
- 🔒 Run one strap through the front door frame. Open both front doors, drape the strap over the boards at the front pad, feed both ends through the front door frames, and buckle inside the car. Pull firmly until tight.
- 🔒 Run one strap through the rear door frame. Repeat at the rear pad using the back door frames. Make sure both straps are taut with no slack.
- 🪢 Secure the leashes. Tuck or tie off any board leashes so they do not drag or flap at highway speed.
⚠️ Liability Note
Our staff provide instructions and inspect your setup, but loading and securing the boards is your responsibility. Our liability waiver includes a note that Auntie Snorkel is not responsible for damage to your vehicle or equipment resulting from improper loading or strapping. By driving away, you confirm that your boards are loaded to your satisfaction.
What to Expect on Your First SUP Session
Stand up paddle boarding looks serene from the beach, and on calm morning water it genuinely is. Here is what a typical first session looks like for a beginner in Kihei.
At the Shop
Our staff will spend a few minutes with you before you head out going over what you might not know: how to carry the board, how to launch from the beach without getting toppled by shore break, how to get from kneeling to standing safely, and the basics of paddling technique. Most guests feel prepared and confident after this brief orientation.
On the Water
Most first-timers start on their knees and work up to standing once they feel the board’s stability. Our wide-body boards are significantly more forgiving than narrower SUP boards, so the transition from kneeling to standing usually happens within the first 15 to 20 minutes. Once you are standing, the experience opens up completely. You can cover distance, explore the coastline, peer into the water at coral and fish below, and take in the mountain and ocean views all at once.
Bring Your Snorkel Gear
One of the best things about a SUP rental at our Kihei location is that the reef starts just across the street. Paddle out, keep the board tethered to you with the leash, and drop in for a snorkel session. Pair your paddle board with our Kihei Premium Snorkel Gear Rental and you have a complete ocean adventure in one morning.
Where to Paddle in Kihei
Stand up paddle boarding works best in calm, protected water with easy beach access. These South Maui spots are our top recommendations.
-
Kamaole Beach Park I (Kam I)
- A two-minute walk from our Kihei shop and our top recommendation for first-time paddlers. The morning waters here are typically calm and glassy, the beach entry is sandy and gradual, and the colorful reef directly offshore is home to Hawaiian green sea turtles and a wide variety of fish. Both ends of the beach offer excellent snorkeling. Lifeguards are on duty and free parking is available right at our shop. For most Kihei guests, there is no reason to drive anywhere else: this is the spot!
-
Kamaole Beach Park II (Kam II)
- A short walk south of Kam I with its own sandy beach entry and good morning water conditions. Kam II tends to be slightly less crowded than Kam I and offers a long stretch of open water for paddlers who want a bit more room to explore. A solid alternative on mornings when Kam I is particularly busy.
-
Kamaole Beach Park III (Kam III)
- The largest of the three Kamaole parks, with a long stretch of open beach and water. A good destination for paddlers who want to cover more distance along the coastline or paddle south toward Keawakapu. Easy parking and facilities on site.
-
Keawakapu Beach
- A beautiful, less crowded beach just south of the Kamaole parks at the northern edge of Wailea. Keawakapu is quieter than the Kamaole strip and offers a long, open paddling corridor along the South Kihei coastline. A pleasant destination for guests who want a more relaxed setting and a longer paddle with fewer other beach users around them.

Rental Care and Responsibility
⚠️ Renters are responsible for the board during the rental period. Damage beyond normal wear may result in additional charges.
⚠️ Paddle boarders should be 10 years of age or older to use their own board.
⚠️ Guests over 250 lbs may find stand up paddle boarding more challenging on our standard boards. Call us at (808) 298-3021 before booking and we will help you choose the best option.
⚠️ Afternoon trade winds make paddleboarding difficult. Plan to be on the water in the morning. Paddling into strong afternoon wind is exhausting and potentially unsafe for beginners.
⚠️ Guests must be able to carry the board to the water. SUP boards are large and require carrying to and from the water.
⚠️ Always watch the water for at least 10-15 minutes before launching. Know where any surf is breaking and where you can get back to shore if conditions change.
⚠️ Paddle boards must be returned to the Kihei shop from which they were rented. They cannot be returned to our Lahaina location.
⚠️ Rinse the board and paddle with fresh water before returning them.
Pro Tips from Your Fun Specialists
- Go in the morning. The single most important tip for Kihei paddle boarding is to be on the water early. By late morning the conditions at the Kamaole parks can change significantly from what they were at 8am.
- Start on your knees. Getting comfortable with the board’s stability from a kneeling position before attempting to stand is the fastest path to standing up confidently. Most beginners who try to stand immediately spend more time falling than paddling.
- Look at the horizon, not your feet. Once you stand up, fix your gaze on a point in the distance rather than looking down at the board. This is the single most effective tip for maintaining balance on a SUP.
- Paddle on alternating sides every few strokes to travel in a straight line. New paddlers often paddle on one side only and wonder why they keep turning in circles.
- Bring your snorkel gear. The reef at Kamaole Beach Park I starts just across the street from our shop and is home to Hawaiian green sea turtles. The combination of a SUP and a snorkel set lets you explore from above and below in the same morning.
- Apply reef-safe sunscreen before leaving the shop and bring a waterproof container for your phone. We carry options for both in our shop.
- If you are transporting the board by car, pick up soft racks and straps at our shop for $9 and allow a few extra minutes at pickup for our staff to talk you through the loading process and check your setup.
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Paddle Board Rentals in Kihei
Do I need any experience to rent a paddle board?
No experience is required. Our wide-body boards are specifically chosen for their stability, and our staff provide free basic instruction at pickup. Most first-time paddlers are standing and moving comfortably within 15 to 20 minutes of getting on the water.
What size boards do you carry?
We carry premium wide-body SUP boards ranging from 9’6″ to 11′ long and approximately 32″ to 34″ wide. Our staff will recommend the right board for your height and weight at pickup.
Why does it matter what time of day I paddle?
South Maui’s afternoon trade winds typically pick up by late morning and can make paddle boarding genuinely difficult. Even experienced paddlers find paddling into a strong trade wind exhausting. Morning sessions offer calm, glassy water that is ideal for beginners and enjoyable for everyone. We strongly recommend planning to be on the water by mid-morning at the latest.
Can I combine paddle boarding with snorkeling?
Absolutely, and our Kihei location makes it especially easy. The reef at Kamaole Beach Park I is a two-minute walk from our shop and is home to Hawaiian green sea turtles. Rent your snorkel gear from us at the same time and you can do both in one stop without moving the car.
Do I need a car to get to the beach?
Not if you are launching from Kamaole Beach Park I. The beach is a two-minute walk from our shop. Pick up your board, walk to the water, and you are paddling. Free parking is also available at our shop.

Yes. We offer free delivery to Kihei, Wailea, and Makena for weekly rentals. For rentals of less than one week, delivery is available for $40 per board. Text or call us at (808) 298-3021 after completing your online reservation to arrange a delivery time.
Do you help strap boards onto my car?
Our staff will talk you through the process with a clear instruction sheet and diagram and come outside to check that your boards are properly secured before you drive away. Loading and strapping is done by you, and our team is there to make sure everything is safe before you leave the parking lot. Soft racks and straps are available at the shop for $9.
How many boards can I put on my car?
A maximum of two paddle boards or two surfboards per vehicle. Do not attempt to load more than two boards onto a single car roof.
Do I need to return the board to the Kihei shop?
Yes. Paddle boards must be returned to the shop from which they were rented. Kihei paddle board rentals must come back to our Kihei location. If you are staying in West Maui, see our Lahaina paddle board rental page.

More About Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Kihei
Two Minutes to the Water – No Car Required
One of the most practical advantages of renting from Auntie Snorkel’s Kihei shop is that Kamaole Beach Park I is a two-minute walk from our front door. Pick up your board, grab your carbon fiber paddle, and walk straight to the water. For guests staying in Kihei, it is the most frictionless paddle boarding experience available on Maui.
Wide Boards Change the Experience for Beginners
Standard rental SUP boards at many shops are narrow and designed for performance rather than accessibility. Our wide-body boards in the 32″ to 34″ range are chosen specifically because they make standing up achievable for first-timers rather than a frustrating exercise in falling. Guests who have tried and struggled on narrower boards elsewhere consistently find our boards noticeably easier.
Carbon Fiber Paddles Are Not a Gimmick
The difference between a heavy aluminum paddle and a carbon fiber paddle becomes obvious after about 20 minutes on the water. Aluminum paddles are dense and flex slightly with each stroke, wasting energy and fatiguing shoulders and arms faster than necessary. A carbon paddle is light, stiff, and transfers every stroke efficiently into forward motion. We include the carbon paddle upgrade because it genuinely improves the experience, not as a marketing detail.
SUP and Snorkel: The Perfect Kihei Morning
Paddle boarding and snorkeling complement each other perfectly at the Kamaole Beach Parks. You paddle out from the beach, covering ground quickly and quietly from above the surface. When you spot a reef or a turtle below, you simply pull on your mask and fins and drop in for a closer look. Then you climb back on and continue your exploration. Hawaiian green sea turtles frequent the reef at Kamaole Beach Park I regularly, and guests who combine their SUP and snorkel rentals almost universally describe the experience as one of the highlights of their entire trip.
