⭐ Wavestorm Skimboards Built for Beginners and Beyond
Auntie Snorkel stocks Wavestorm skimboards, the brand trusted by beginners and casual riders across Hawaii. Wavestorm builds their boards with a soft foam deck and a slick underside that glides well across wet sand and shallow shorebreak. They’re forgiving when you wipe out, durable enough for a full day of use, and sized to work for kids and adults alike. We also carry wood boards with EVA foam grip tops for riders who prefer a traditional feel.
⭐ Kihei’s Shorebreak Is Made for This
Kihei beaches deliver the consistent, gentle shorebreak that skimboarding needs. The Kamaole Beach Parks pick up south and southwest swells reliably, especially in summer, and the sandy beach bottom makes learning forgiving. You don’t need big waves to have a great time on a skimboard.
⭐ Easy to Learn, Fun All Day
Most first-timers ride their first wave within an hour of picking up a board. Skimboarding has one of the lowest learning curves of any beach sport. Kids, teens, and adults all get hooked fast, and the activity holds interest for hours rather than fizzling out after one run.
⭐ Swap Boards If Something Feels Off
Not every board feels right for every rider. If the board you first grab just isn’t clicking, bring it back to the shop and we’ll swap it out. We want you to have a great time on the water, and finding the right fit matters.
⭐ Full Day of Fun for a Low Price
Renting a skimboard is one of the most affordable ways to fill a full Maui beach day. For less than the cost of a single activity ticket, you and your crew get hours of entertainment at the shoreline. There’s no schedule, no tour group, and no waiting around.
⭐ Convenient Pickup in the Heart of Kihei
Our Kihei shop on South Kihei Road is easy to reach from Kihei, Wailea, and Makena resorts. Pickup takes a few minutes. You can be on the sand with your board within 15 minutes of walking through our door.
⭐ Pick Up at Either Our Kihei or Lahaina Shop
Skimboards are available for pickup and return at either our Kihei store and our Lahaina store, regardless of which shop you reserved from. You can treat both locations like one big shop!
What’s Included in Your Kihei Skimboard Rentals

✔ 25% off the standard rental rate when you book online
Renting from Auntie Snorkel is fast and simple. Here is what to expect from booking to return.
Step 1 — Book online. Select your rental dates and complete your booking. You’ll receive an order confirmation email to show at pickup.
Step 2 — Pick up at our Kihei or Lahaina shop. Come in during shop hours and we’ll hand you a clean, sanitized cooler in minutes. Tell us which location works better for you when you book.
Step 3 — Head to the beach. Take your Wavestorm skimboard to any South Maui beach. The Kamaole Beach Parks are our top picks for typically gentle shore break conditions.
Step 4 — Swap if you need to. If the board doesn’t feel right, bring it back to the shop and we’ll find you a better fit at no charge.
Step 5 — Return when you’re done. Bring the cooler back to either of our shops by the end of your rental period.
A wide, sandy beach with good shorebreak on south swell days and lifeguards on duty. It’s a short walk or drive from our shop and easy to access with street and lot parking nearby. This is a solid first stop if you’re new to skimboarding.
Our most recommended skimboarding beach in Kihei. The beach shape and shore break profile here tend to work especially well for both beginners and more experienced riders.
The farthest south of the three Kamaole parks, with a longer stretch of sandy shoreline and plenty of room to build speed. Great for families who want space to spread out between skimboarding sessions and the rest of their beach day.
A longer, less crowded beach just south of Kihei that catches south swell well. Keawakapu tends to be more spread out than the Kamaole parks and offers a beautiful setting for a full beach day.
What Is Skimboarding? A Quick Primer
Skimboarding is a beach sport where you run along the shoreline, drop the board onto the wet sand, and jump on to glide across the shallow wash of a retreating wave. More advanced riders time their run to meet an incoming wave and ride it back toward the beach. The basics come quickly; the skill ceiling is genuinely high.
Skimboarding requires no prior experience and no special equipment beyond the board. You stay in very shallow water the whole time, which makes it accessible for kids as young as 5 or 6 and for adults who don’t consider themselves strong swimmers. It’s one of the most approachable active beach sports you can try on Maui.
Who Should Rent a Skimboard from Auntie Snorkel?
This rental is a great fit for:
Families with kids and teens who want an active, skill-based beach activity that holds attention for hours
Guests staying in Kihei, Wailea, or Makena who want a full-day beach activity close to their resort
Anyone who wants to try skimboarding for the first time on beginner-friendly Wavestorm boards
Groups who want to take turns and compete on the shorebreak together
Travelers looking for maximum beach fun per dollar without booking a full guided activity
Experienced skimboarders who want a ready-to-ride board without the hassle of traveling with their own
⚠️ Renters are responsible for the board during the rental period. Damage beyond normal wear may result in additional charges.
⚠️ Skimboarding takes place in shallow shorebreak. Give yourself and others plenty of space to run and ride.
⚠️ Children should have adult supervision at all times while skimboarding.
⚠️ Skimboarding is not recommended for guests with serious knee, ankle, or back injuries.
⚠️ Do not skimboard at Makena State Beach Park (Big Beach). Big Beach produces some of the most powerful and unpredictable shorebreak on Maui. Even experienced skimboarders suffer serious injuries there regularly. The wave energy at Big Beach is far beyond what recreational skimboarding requires or can safely handle. Stay on the beaches recommended above.
⚠️ Check conditions before heading out. Flat days with no shorebreak are very mellow and good for total beginners to practice working with the board. South swell days, particularly in summer afternoons, deliver the more exciting conditions for skimboarding in Kihei. Use caution and know your limits.
⚠️ Do not take skimboards into deeper water or use them in rocky areas.
Pro Tips from Your Fun Specialists
Run parallel to the shoreline rather than straight at the water when you’re starting out. This gives you better balance and more momentum on the board.
Drop the board with the nose angled slightly toward the water, then hop on quickly with both feet. Hesitating after the drop is the most common beginner mistake.
Morning tends to be calmer at Kihei beaches. South swell often builds through the afternoon, so conditions for skimboarding can improve later in the day.
If the board doesn’t feel right, bring it back to the shop. Our staff will swap it out at no charge and help you find a board that might feel better for you.
Reef-safe sunscreen is required on all Hawaiian beaches.
Grab a cooler rental from our shop to keep drinks cold while you’re on the sand all day. You can get everything in one stop.
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Skimboard Rentals in Kihei
What is the best beach for skimboarding near Kihei?
Kamaole Beach Park II is our top pick. The shorebreak and beach shape there work well for skimboarding at most skill levels. Kamaole I and III are also great options, and Keawakapu Beach is a quieter alternative just south. Avoid Big Beach (Makena State Beach Park) entirely for skimboarding, as the shorebreak there causes serious injuries even to experienced riders.
Do I need any experience to skimboard?
No experience is required. The Wavestorm boards we rent are specifically designed to be forgiving and beginner-friendly. Our staff at the Kihei shop can also walk you through the basics at pickup.
What if the board I pick doesn’t feel right?
Bring it back and we’ll swap it out at no charge. Finding the right board size and fit makes a real difference, and we want you to enjoy your time on the water.
How old do kids need to be to use a skimboard?
Kids as young as 5 or 6 can enjoy skimboarding with adult supervision. If you’re renting for a young child, ask our staff at pickup about the right board size for their height and weight.
Can I take the board to multiple beaches?
Yes. Your rental is yours for the full rental period and you can use it at any South Maui beach.
What happens if the conditions are flat?
Skimboarding is much more fun with active shorebreak. If conditions are flat when you arrive at the beach, try a different spot or wait until later in the afternoon. You can also text or call us at (808) 298-3021 and we’ll help you check conditions before you head out.
What is the cancellation policy?
Auntie Snorkel offers free cancellation anytime prior to pickup. No deadline, no fees.

Why Kihei Is One of Maui’s Best Places to Skimboard
Most of Maui’s beaches are too rocky, too calm, or too wave-heavy for skimboarding. Kihei is different. The Kamaole Beach Parks line a south-facing sandy shoreline that catches consistent south and southwest swells. That swell direction produces the gentle rolling shorebreak that skimboarding needs. The sandy bottom makes wipeouts forgiving, and the wide shoreline gives riders plenty of room to run.
Why Wavestorm Makes Sense for Rental Skimboards
Wavestorm built their reputation on beginner-friendly foam-top surfboards, and they bring the same philosophy to their skimboards. The soft foam deck reduces the sting of falls. The slick underside glides well across wet sand. The construction is durable enough for daily rental use. Wavestorm skimboards give first-time riders the best possible chance at actually enjoying the sport instead of spending the day fighting an unforgiving piece of equipment.
Skimboarding vs. Boogie Boarding vs. Surfing
Boogie boarding is the most accessible of the three: you lie on the board and let breaking waves carry you toward shore. Surfing requires paddling through breaking waves and significant balance practice before standing consistently. Skimboarding falls between the two in terms of skill required. You stay in shallow water, build speed yourself, and learn faster than surfing. Riders who want an active, skill-based beach experience without paddling into deeper water tend to gravitate toward skimboarding.
The Best Beach Activity You Haven’t Tried Yet
Most rental items are passive: a chair to sit in, an umbrella to sit under, a cooler to drink from. A skimboard is one of the few rentals that delivers active entertainment for hours. Kids who might drift away from the beach by midday stay engaged at the shorebreak through the afternoon. Adults who thought they were just there to relax end up competing with each other on who can ride the farthest. A skimboard rental consistently delivers more genuine enjoyment per dollar than almost anything else we offer.

Cali and Art are amazing! Cali helped with setting us up with snorkels to rent during our visit and also helped with setting up an absolutely amazing snorkel excursion. Art recommended and set up a sunset dinner cruise for us that surpassed our expectations. I could have asked for a better experience. Not only were they helpful but extremely nice and personable. Highly recommend!
