Why You’ll Love Renting a Beach Cruiser in Kihei

Electra Beach Cruisers Built for Comfort

Auntie Snorkel rents Electra brand beach cruisers, one of the most well-regarded names in comfort cycling. These single-speed bikes feature an upright riding position, oversized padded saddle seats, flat wide pedals, and a large front basket. They are built for cruising, not racing, and the ride feels immediately comfortable even for guests who haven’t been on a bike in years.

Seven Miles of Beaches, All Accessible by Bike

Kihei’s coastline runs for seven miles, lined with beaches, snorkel spots, restaurants, shops, and parks. Nearly all of them are reachable without a car. Turn left out of our shop and you cruise south through Wailea and on toward Makena. Turn right and you head north toward Cove Park and Kihei shopping areas. The bike unlocks the whole corridor in a way that driving and parking never quite does.

Everything Set Up at Pickup

When you arrive at our Kihei shop, we adjust the seat and handlebars to your height, check and inflate the tires, and send you off with a map showing the best routes and stops along the South Kihei Road corridor. You walk in, we set the bike up for you, and you are rolling in minutes.

Helmet and Lock Included

Every bike rental includes a helmet and a free lock. Hawaii does not legally require helmets for adults, but we provide one for every rider because we want you to come back smiling. The lock lets you leave the bike securely at any beach or shop stop along your route.

Reserve Ahead

Bikes are one of our most popular and most limited rentals. Our inventory doesn’t allow us to carry as many as we’d like, which means they book out regularly. Reserving online secures your bike before you arrive on Maui and locks in the 20% online discount at the same time.

Pick Up at Our Kihei Shop

Bike rentals are available for pickup and return at our Kihei store, conveniently located in the heart of South Kihei!

How Your Kihei Bike Rental Works

Renting from Auntie Snorkel is fast and simple. Here is what to expect from booking to return.

Step 1 — Book online. Select your rental dates and complete your booking. You’ll receive an order confirmation email to show at pickup.

Step 2 — Pick up at our Kihei shop. Come in during shop hours and we’ll fit the bike to your height, check the tires, and hand you a map. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

Step 3 — Practice in our parking lot if needed. These Electra beach cruisers use coaster brakes, meaning you stop by pedaling backward rather than squeezing a hand lever. If you haven’t ridden in a while or aren’t used to coaster brakes, take a lap or two around our parking lot before heading onto the road. Our staff will walk you through it.

Step 4 — Head out and explore. Turn left for Wailea, Makena, and Turtle Town. Turn right for Cove Park and the Kihei shopping. The whole South Maui coastline is yours.

Step 5 — Return when you’re done. Bring the bike back to our Kihei shop by the end of your rental period.

Where to Ride in Kihei

Kihei’s South Kihei Road corridor is one of the most bike-friendly stretches on Maui. Here are our top route recommendations from our shop.

  • South: Wailea and Makena (Turn Left Out of Our Shop)
    • Head south on South Kihei Road through Kihei and into Wailea, where the bike path winds past world-class resorts, oceanfront restaurants, and a series of beautiful beaches. Continue further into Makena for a stop at Turtle Town or to see the dramatic lava fields near Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve. This is the most scenic direction and a favorite for guests who want a longer ride with plenty of stops.
  • North: Cove Park and Kihei shopping (Turn Right Out of Our Shop)
    • Head north along South Kihei Road to Cove Park, where local surfers ride one of Kihei’s most consistent beginner breaks. It is worth a stop to watch even if you are not surfing. Continue on to must-visit restaurants and shopping in Kihei.
  • Kamaole Beach Parks I, II, and III
    • All three Kamaole parks are within easy biking distance of our shop, with parking available at each. Lock your bike at any of the three parks and spend the morning snorkeling, swimming, or relaxing in the sun. The front basket handles a snorkel bag, towel, and small cooler with room to spare.
  • Keawakapu Beach
    • A beautiful, less crowded beach just south of the Kamaole parks and sitting at the northern edge of Wailea. It is an easy 10-15 minute ride from our shop and one of Kihei’s most underrated beaches. The bike path from here into Wailea is smooth and flat.

Why Biking Beats Driving in Kihei

Kihei’s geography makes it uniquely suited to getting around by bike. The main beach corridor follows a single road, South Kihei Road, that runs parallel to the ocean for miles with beaches, restaurants, shops, and activities spaced along the whole length. On a bike, you ride up, lock up, and walk to the water in under a minute.

The terrain is flat and forgiving all the way from central Kihei to Wailea, with only gradual changes in elevation. You do not need to be a serious cyclist to enjoy it. The Electra cruisers are designed for exactly this kind of casual, stop-and-explore riding. Guests who rent bikes almost universally describe it as one of the best decisions of their trip.

Safety Notes and Rental Responsibility

⚠️ These Electra beach cruisers use coaster brakes. You stop by pedaling backward, not by squeezing a hand lever. Practice in our parking lot at pickup if this style of braking is unfamiliar to you.

⚠️ Helmets are provided and strongly encouraged. Hawaii does not legally require adult cyclists to wear helmets, but we recommend wearing one whenever you ride near the main road.

⚠️ Kihei streets can get congested with visitors who are unfamiliar with local roads. Stay focused on your surroundings and watch for vehicles making quick turns into commercial driveways.

⚠️ Pull over to enjoy the views rather than looking away from the road while riding. The scenery is beautiful and worth a proper stop.

⚠️ Renters are responsible for the bike during the rental period. Damage beyond normal wear may result in additional charges.

⚠️ Bikes are our most limited rental. If your preferred rental dates are not available online, call us at (808) 298-3021 and we will do our best to help.

Pro Tips from Your Fun Specialists

  • Before leaving our parking lot, test the coaster brakes a few times until they feel natural. Pedaling backward to stop takes a moment to get used to if you are accustomed to hand brakes.
  • Head south first if you want the most scenic route. The Wailea bike path is smooth, flat, and lined with ocean views the entire way.
  • Pack your snorkel gear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and a water bottle in the front basket before leaving the shop. The basket is large enough to cover multiple beach stops without unloading and reloading a car.
  • Lock your bike securely at each stop. The free lock we provide fits any standard bike rack.
  • Grab a locally-designed hat and sun shirt from our shop and wear them for your ride. The sun in Maui is strong, even on cloudy days.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is required on all Hawaiian beaches. Grab some in the shop before you head out.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Bike Rentals in Kihei

What kind of bikes do you rent?

We rent Electra brand single-speed beach cruisers. They feature an upright riding position, oversized comfortable saddle seats, flat wide pedals, and a large front basket. These are comfort bikes designed for leisurely coastal riding.

How do the brakes work?

The Electra beach cruisers use coaster brakes. You stop by pedaling backward rather than squeezing a hand lever. If you are not used to this style of braking, our staff will explain it at pickup and encourage you to take a practice run in our parking lot before heading out onto the road.

Is a helmet required?

Hawaii does not legally require adult cyclists to wear helmets. We include a helmet with every rental and strongly encourage you to wear it, especially when riding near the main road.

How far can I ride?

Kihei’s flat terrain makes biking accessible for almost any fitness level. The South Kihei Road corridor runs for seven miles with beaches and destinations along the whole length. Most guests comfortably cover 3-6 miles in a morning with multiple stops. The route to Wailea is generally smooth and flat.

Can I carry snorkel gear on the bike?

Yes. The large front basket handles a snorkel bag, fins, and a towel without difficulty. Many guests pick up their snorkel rental from us at the same time as their bike and ride directly to the reef.

More About Biking in Kihei

Kihei Is Built for Beach Cruisers

Most of Maui’s towns are not particularly bike-friendly. They are too hilly, too spread out, or lacking the continuous corridor that makes casual riding enjoyable. Kihei is the exception. The flat, seven-mile stretch of South Kihei Road runs parallel to one of the most beach-dense coastlines in the state. Every mile of it has something worth stopping for.

The Front Basket Changes Everything

Pack your snorkel set, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and cold drinks from your cooler and you are set for the entire coastline without returning to the car. Guests who use the basket creatively, loading up at the Farmers Market, carrying beach chairs, transporting groceries back to the condo, consistently describe it as one of the most practical and enjoyable parts of the rental.

The Best Way to See Kihei Like a Local

Locals in Kihei bike to the beach, to the Farmers Market, to their favorite breakfast spot. Renting a cruiser puts you in that same rhythm, moving at a pace where you notice things, stop when something looks good, and cover more ground more enjoyably than you would on foot or behind a windshield.

Reserve Early Because Inventory Is Limited

Our bike inventory is genuinely limited by the size of our shop. Guests who try to walk in and rent on a busy morning are sometimes disappointed. Booking online reserves your bike before you arrive, locks in the 20% discount, and removes the uncertainty entirely. If you are planning to ride during your stay, this is one rental where advance booking matters.
