Why You’ll Love Our Wetsuit and Thermal Top Rentals
⭐ Snorkel for Hours Without Getting Cold
Maui’s ocean water is warm by most standards, but it is cooler than your body temperature. Without insulation, even warm water will chill you over time, cutting your snorkel session short before you are ready to get out. A 3mm neoprene spring suit or thermal top keeps your core warm throughout a full morning of snorkeling. Locals wear them year-round for exactly this reason.
⭐ 3mm Premium Neoprene From Sea Sports
We rent Sea Sports spring suits and thermal tops in 3mm premium foam neoprene. This material is soft and flexible enough to move freely in the water while providing genuine thermal protection. The 3mm thickness is the sweet spot for Maui’s ocean temperatures: warm enough to make a real difference, thin enough to stay comfortable when you surface.
⭐ Sun Protection, Buoyancy, and Reef Protection in One
A wetsuit or thermal top does more than keep you warm. The neoprene material blocks UV rays, reducing sun exposure during long sessions in the water. The 3mm foam adds buoyancy, making you slightly more comfortable at the surface. It also puts a protective layer between your skin and any reef or rock contact, which matters when you are floating close to coral.
⭐ Easy On and Off With a Heavy-Duty Zipper
These suits feature a large, heavy-duty zipper that makes getting in and out straightforward, even with wet hands and a little sand involved. No wrestling with your wetsuit on the beach while the rest of your group waits.
⭐ Sizes for the Whole Family
We stock kids sizes as well as adult small through 3X. Our staff help every guest choose the right style and size at pickup. If the fit is off, we will find a better option before you leave the shop.
⭐ 25% Off When You Book Online
Booking ahead through auntiesnorkel.com cuts the standard wetsuit rental price by 25%. Reserve your size in advance and it will be ready for you at pickup.
⭐ Pick Up at Either Our Lahaina or Kihei Shop
Wetsuit and thermal top rentals are available for pickup and return at either our Lahaina store or our Kihei store, regardless of which shop you reserved from. You can treat both locations like one big shop!

How Your Wetsuit Rental Works
Renting from Auntie Snorkel is fast and simple. Here is what to expect from booking to return.
Step 1 — Book online. Select your rental dates and complete your booking. You’ll receive an order confirmation email to show at pickup.
Step 2 — Pick up at our Lahaina or Kihei shop. Come in during shop hours and our staff will help you choose between a spring suit and a thermal top, and fit you in the right size. This process takes just a few minutes and makes a real difference in your comfort in the water.
Step 3 — Head to the water. Take your wetsuit or thermal top to any West Maui snorkel beach. Put it on before entering the water and zip up fully for the best thermal performance.
Step 4 — Stay warm and snorkel longer. The neoprene insulation keeps your core warm through a full morning of snorkeling, letting you focus on the reef and the marine life rather than how cold you are getting.
Step 5 — Return when you’re done. Rinse the wetsuit with fresh water and bring it back to either of our shops by the end of your rental period.

Spring Suit vs. Thermal Top: Which Is Right for You?
We carry two styles and our staff help every guest choose at pickup. Here is a quick guide to the differences.
Spring Suit
A full wetsuit with short sleeves and shorts-length legs. The spring suit covers more surface area than a thermal top, which means more warmth and more sun and reef protection overall. It is the better choice for guests who tend to get cold easily, plan to snorkel for extended periods, or want maximum protection from the sun and reef.
Thermal Top
A short-sleeve wetsuit jacket that covers the torso and upper arms. The thermal top is a lighter option that provides core warmth and UV protection while leaving the legs free. It is a good choice for guests who tend to run warm, prefer more freedom of movement, or find full wetsuits uncomfortable. Many experienced snorkelers prefer a thermal top in Maui’s warmer months.
Still Not Sure?
Our staff at the shop will ask about your plans, your typical sensitivity to cold water, and the time of year to help you choose. There is no wrong answer, and if you are genuinely unsure, most guests are happy they went with the spring suit.
When Do You Need a Wetsuit or Thermal Top in Maui?
Maui’s ocean water temperature ranges from roughly 73 degrees in winter months to around 80 degrees in late summer. Both temperatures feel comfortable when you first enter but cool the body over time, especially at the surface where evaporation adds a chill factor.
A wetsuit or thermal top is most useful in these situations: snorkeling for more than 30-45 minutes at a stretch, visiting Maui during winter months when water is cooler, snorkeling at depth where the water temperature drops, visiting sites like Honolua Bay where deeper water creates a noticeable temperature difference, or any time you tend to get cold quickly. Many guests who skip the wetsuit in the morning wish they had it by the second snorkel stop.
Who Should Rent a Wetsuit or Thermal Top from Auntie Snorkel?
This rental is a great fit for:
- Guests who plan to snorkel for an extended period and want to stay warm and comfortable throughout
- Anyone visiting Maui during the cooler winter months (November through March) when water temperatures are lower
- Guests who tend to get cold easily in the water, even in warm ocean temperatures
- Anyone heading to deeper West Maui snorkel sites like Honolua Bay where the water temperature drops noticeably
- Guests who want sun protection during long water sessions without relying entirely on sunscreen
- Anyone who wants a layer of protection against reef and rock abrasions while snorkeling in shallower areas
- Parents renting for children who tend to get cold faster than adults

Rental Care and Responsibility
⚠️ Renters are responsible for the wetsuit during the rental period. Damage beyond normal wear may result in additional charges.
⚠️ Rinse the wetsuit with fresh water before returning it. Salt water left in neoprene shortens its lifespan.
⚠️ Do not leave the wetsuit in a hot car or in direct sun for extended periods. Heat damages neoprene.
⚠️ Return the wetsuit in the same condition it was received. Do not use it in rocky areas in a way that causes tears or punctures.
Pro Tips from Your Fun Specialists
- Ask our staff at pickup if you are unsure whether a spring suit or thermal top is right for your plans. They will help you choose based on the time of year, the sites you plan to visit, and how you typically feel in the water.
- If the wetsuit feels tight when dry, do not worry. Neoprene stretches when wet and will feel more comfortable once you are in the water.
- Zip up fully before entering the water. An unzipped wetsuit lets cold water flush through and defeats the purpose.
- Rinse the wetsuit with fresh water after each use and hang it in the shade to dry. Do not leave it balled up in a bag between uses.
- Apply reef-safe sunscreen to any exposed skin before entering the water. The wetsuit covers your torso but your face, neck, and lower legs still need protection.
- Children tend to get cold faster than adults. If you are on the fence about renting a wetsuit for a child, the answer is almost always yes.
- Auntie Snorkel’s wetsuit rental rates are much lower than the rates you’ll find once you’re on a boat tour. Rent your wetsuit with us ahead of time to save!
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Wetsuit Rentals in Lahaina
Do I really need a wetsuit for snorkeling in Maui?
It depends on how long you plan to be in the water and how sensitive you are to cold. Maui’s ocean is warm but cooler than body temperature, so extended snorkel sessions can leave you chilled without insulation. Guests who snorkel for more than 30-45 minutes at a stretch, visit during cooler winter months, or tend to run cold in the water benefit noticeably from wearing one.
What is the difference between a spring suit and a thermal top?
A spring suit is a full short-sleeve, short-leg wetsuit that covers both the torso and upper legs. A thermal top is a short-sleeve wetsuit jacket that covers only the torso and upper arms. The spring suit provides more overall warmth and coverage. The thermal top is lighter and gives more freedom of movement. Our staff will help you choose at pickup.
What sizes do you carry?
We carry kids sizes and adult sizes from small through 3X. Our staff fit every guest at pickup. If you have questions about sizing before you arrive, call us at (808) 298-3021 and we will help.
Will a wetsuit make me float better?
Yes. The 3mm foam neoprene adds buoyancy, which means you sit slightly higher in the water and spend less energy maintaining your position at the surface. This is a secondary benefit that many snorkelers appreciate as much as the warmth.
Can I wear a wetsuit on a boat snorkel tour?
Yes. Most Maui boat snorkel tours allow and even encourage wetsuit use. Some tours offer wetsuits for an additional fee on board. Renting from Auntie Snorkel before your tour ensures you have a well-fitted suit ready to go without paying on-board prices.
Can I pick up at one shop and return to the other?
Yes, absolutely. You can pick up from either our Lahaina or Kihei shop and return to either location.
What is the cancellation policy?
Auntie Snorkel offers free cancellation anytime prior to pickup. No deadline, no fees.

More About Wetsuits and Thermal Tops for Maui Snorkeling
Why Locals Wear Wetsuits Year-Round
Visitors sometimes assume wetsuits are only for cold water. Maui locals know better. Even in summer, a 3mm thermal top makes snorkeling significantly more comfortable over long sessions. It eliminates the gradual chill that cuts so many snorkel trips short, removes the need to constantly reapply sunscreen to covered areas, and adds the small buoyancy boost that makes surface swimming feel more effortless. Experienced snorkelers who have tried both consistently prefer being in the water with some insulation.
3mm Is the Right Thickness for Maui
Wetsuits come in a range of thicknesses from 1mm to 7mm and beyond. Thinner suits provide less warmth but more flexibility. Thicker suits provide more warmth but can feel restrictive and cause overheating on the surface. For Maui’s water temperatures, 3mm is the standard recommendation among local snorkelers and dive operators. It is warm enough to make a meaningful difference during long sessions and thin enough to stay comfortable between water entries.
Sun Protection That Works While You Snorkel
Snorkeling places you face-down at the surface with your back fully exposed to direct Maui sun for the duration of the session. Sunscreen helps but wears off quickly in salt water. A wetsuit or thermal top eliminates the sun exposure problem entirely for the areas it covers, reducing burn risk significantly on longer sessions. Guests who have come home from a snorkel trip with a severe back burn are usually the ones who skip the wetsuit the second time.
A Rental That Makes Snorkel Tours Better Too
If you have booked a West Maui snorkel sail, a Lanai snorkel tour, or any other boat-based snorkel experience departing from the West Side, renting a wetsuit or thermal top before the tour improves the experience noticeably. The channel waters between Maui and Lanai can be cooler than the nearshore reef areas, and arriving at the boat already in a well-fitted wetsuit means you spend more time in the water and less time shivering on deck between stops.
