Hamoa Beach is a stunning beach in East Maui, popular with locals and visitors alike. It offers breathtaking beauty, soft salt and pepper sands, clear waters, and lush surroundings.
Hamoa Beach is located about 10 minutes from Hana town on the eastern coast of Maui. It’s relatively isolated and accessed via the famous Hana Highway, a scenic and winding road that offers panoramic views of the island’s lush landscapes. From Auntie Snorkel Kihei, your drive straight there will be approximately 2.5 hours.
Hamoa Beach access includes street parking and a narrow walkway with some stairs.
Parking and Access
Hamoa Beach offers parking along the narrow street, but please be attentive to any posted street signs indicating parking regulations.
Hamoa Beach is surrounded by cliffs, and has 2 access paths. One is via stairs leading down from the hotel shuttle drop off, and the other is a small, steep service road at the other end that you may walk down (please don’t drive it!). Some areas may be closed from time to time for maintenance, so please pay attention to posted signage.
Facilities and Amenities
This beach does have portable toilets, a shaded pavilion with picnic tables, and a foot shower.
There are no lifeguards at this beach. Exercise caution, and if in doubt, don’t go out!

Snorkeling and Surf
Hamoa Beach has a consistent and well-formed shore break, which creates excellent waves for experienced bodysurfers and boogie boarders. The wave action is one of the highlights for adventure-seekers visiting the beach. Keep in mind that the waters here have no buffer from open ocean power, so conditions can change dramatically and quickly.
On exceptionally calm ocean days, there can be some good snorkeling on the left side of the cove. But please be aware that currents can be very strong, and conditions can change quickly. Always inform yourself of the local forecast, your abilities, and your immediate surroundings.
Environment and Seasonal Variation
Hamoa Beach features lush vegetation and cliffs, creating a dramatic backdrop that adds to its natural beauty. Travel magazines often highlight this beach because of its picturesque scenery.
Responsible tourism practices, such as proper disposal of trash and the use of reef-safe sunscreen, can contribute to the long-term conservation of this stunning coastal environment on Maui.
The water conditions at Hamoa Beach can vary depending on the season. During the summer months, May – September, the waters can be more calm and clear, making it ideal for the whole family. However, in the winter months, the surf can be more prevalent and even quite strong, making ocean conditions dangerous. Always know your limits and exercise caution.
Remember to respect the natural beauty and environment of Hamoa Beach by leaving no trace and following any posted rules and regulations. Hamoa Beach is an ideal destination for those looking to experience the unspoiled and natural beauty of Maui’s eastern coastline. It offers a picturesque beach experience, with opportunities for swimming, bodysurfing, and simply taking in the stunning scenery. It’s a place to relax and unwind, surrounded by the pristine natural landscapes of Hawaii.
About
Auntie Snorkel
Auntie Snorkel shop has been serving Maui’s fun seekers since 1985. We're the original South Maui Snorkel Shop. When I bought the shop 10 years ago from Auntie, we decided to keep the name. The name "Auntie" is a term of respect here in Hawaii. I'm living my dream. I get to meet awesome people from all over the world and share with them my love and knowledge of this magical island that I get to call home. We know all the spots. I have lived here since 2001. We're the true definition of a family owned and operated shop. I answer the phones and work the shop along with my family. When you shop with us you're supporting my ohana and for that I thank you!! Why go anywhere else? We're the friendliest, fastest, cheapest and our location is the most epic! Mahalo and Aloha”. ~Mark Noble (Owner & Maui Fun Expert)
