Snorkeling in Maui is an unforgettable experience, filled with vibrant marine life, crystal-clear waters, and stunning coral reefs. However, like any ocean activity, snorkeling comes with potential risks. At Auntie Snorkel, we want you to have the best and safestsnorkeling adventure possible. That’s why we offer top-quality rental gear and free safety resources to help you stay prepared. Here’s a guide to the most common Maui ocean hazards — and how to mitigate them like a pro!
1. Strong Currents & Rip Tides
The Danger:
Maui’s ocean conditions can change quickly, and strong currents or rip tides can pull even experienced swimmers out to deeper water. It’s easy to underestimate the power of the ocean, especially when snorkeling in unfamiliar areas.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Check our Maui Beach Guides and Weather & Waves Forecast pages before heading out. We update these resources regularly to help you choose the safest snorkeling locations, and where available, you can check live webcams to see real-time ocean conditions before deciding where to go.
✅ Rent a float belt or life vest from Auntie Snorkel to add buoyancy and reduce fatigue.
✅ Always snorkel with a buddy, and avoid areas where waves break heavily.
✅ If caught in a rip current, don’t panic! Swim parallel to shore until you escape the current, then head back to safety.
2. Unexpected Large Waves
The Danger:
Even on calm days, occasional larger waves can roll in and knock snorkelers against rocks or drag them into deeper water. More commonly, shorebreak waves can also be dangerous when entering or exiting the water.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Always use our Weather & Waves Forecast pages to check swell and wind forecasts before heading out.
✅ Enter and exit the water carefully, always watching out for wave sets.
✅ Use a life vest or float belt to provide extra floatation and support in case waves get choppy.
✅ Always talk to our Fun Specialists for the latest updates, and pay close attention to the free safety briefing we provide before heading out. Our team is here to help ensure your snorkeling adventure is both safe and unforgettable!
3. Fatigue & Muscle Cramps
The Danger:
Snorkeling is fun, but it’s also a workout! Many visitors don’t realize how tiring it can be, especially when exploring farther from shore. Muscle cramps and exhaustion can make it difficult to swim back.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Rent a float belt or life vest to conserve energy and snorkel longer without fatigue.
✅ Take breaks! Rest onshore in a comfy beach chair under an umbrella between snorkeling sessions.
✅ Stay hydrated and stretch before entering the water to reduce muscle cramps.
✅ If you start to feel tired, return to shore before exhaustion sets in.
4. Coral & Rock Scrapes
The Danger:
Maui’s coral reefs are beautiful but sharp! Accidental contact can cause painful cuts and scrapes. Plus, coral is a living organism, and touching it can harm fragile marine ecosystems.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Wear a wetsuit rental or buy a rash guard from Auntie Snorkel to protect your skin.
✅ Always float horizontally (a float belt helps) and avoid standing on coral.
✅ Paddle around on a stand-uppaddle board to spot areas with deeper water where you can snorkel safely, and bring your snorkel gear in its mesh bag so you can hop in and snorkel next to your board.
✅ If you get scraped, wash the wound with mild soap and fresh water, and apply antiseptic. To avoid infection, it’s a good idea to stay out of the ocean when you have any fresh wounds.
5. Jellyfish & Other Stingers
The Danger:
Jellyfish and other stinging sea creatures occasionally drift into Maui’s waters. Their stings can cause discomfort, irritation, or even allergic reactions.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Check Hawai’i Ocean Safety updates before snorkeling—they provide alerts for jellyfish swarms and other ocean hazards.
✅ Look around the beach before you head into the water. Infamous Portuguese man-o-war often wash into near-shore areas in groups, and you’ll see many on the beach if they’re present.
✅ Wear a wetsuit rental for added protection against stings.
✅ If stung, rinse with vinegar or seawater (not freshwater) and remove tentacles with tweezers.
✅ If you have a severe reaction, seek medical help immediately.
6. Sudden Weather Changes
The Danger:
Maui’s weather can shift unexpectedly. A sunny morning can quickly turn into a stormy afternoon, bringing strong winds and poor visibility.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Use our Weather & Waves Forecast pages to plan your snorkeling trip around the best conditions. Use our Maui Beach Guides to check live web cams around the island and find the best conditions.
✅ If the wind picks up when you’re out in the water, head back to shore immediately.
✅ Rent awetsuit to stay warm in case of unexpected chilly water temperatures.
✅ If conditions seem to be changing, don’t risk it—save snorkeling for another day!
7. Getting Lost or Disoriented
The Danger:
With so much underwater beauty, it’s easy to drift farther than intended. Strong currents and similar-looking shoreline views can make it difficult to find your way back.
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Use our Maui Beach Guides to familiarize yourself with snorkeling spots before heading out.
✅ Always take note of your entry point before getting in the water.
✅ Stay close to shore or your tour boat and avoid venturing too far out.
✅ Snorkel with a buddy and use floatation—it’s safer and more fun!
8. Marine Life Encounters
The Danger:
Most marine life in Maui is harmless, but it’s important to respect them all, especially urchins, sea turtles, eels, seals, and reef sharks. Never touch or chase marine creatures!
How to Stay Safe:
✅ Keep a respectful distance from all marine life.
✅ Never feed fish or other sea creatures—it disrupts their natural behavior.
✅ Use premiumsnorkel gear from Auntie Snorkel for a clear view, so you can admire marine life safely. You can even rent a GoPro to take your sightings back home and share with friends!

About
Auntie Snorkel
Auntie Snorkel shop has been serving Maui’s fun seekers since 1985. We're the original South Maui Snorkel Shop. When I bought the shop 10 years ago from Auntie, we decided to keep the name. The name "Auntie" is a term of respect here in Hawaii. I'm living my dream. I get to meet awesome people from all over the world and share with them my love and knowledge of this magical island that I get to call home. We know all the spots. I have lived here since 2001. We're the true definition of a family owned and operated shop. I answer the phones and work the shop along with my family. When you shop with us you're supporting my ohana and for that I thank you!! Why go anywhere else? We're the friendliest, fastest, cheapest and our location is the most epic! Mahalo and Aloha”. ~Mark Noble (Owner & Maui Fun Expert)
Dave is a top professional but an even better guy! Thanks for looking after two lost Irish people with no background in snorkellingTo allow us to spend a few days with the beautiful depths of the Pacific Ocean !!

These guys are super friendly and helpful. I go to Maui twice a year and I only rent from here. I went to another spot down the street for a few years but ended up back at auntie snorkel because the experience is so much better. Special shout out to Sarah and Scotty for being the best.

I highly recommend Auntie Snorkel. Dave got me into a prescription mask which made a huge difference. I also would pre-order on line for significant savings. I'm a repeat customer.
