Mokule’ia Bay – Slaughterhouse Beach
Mokule’ia Bay, also known as Slaughterhouse Beach, is a beautiful and relatively secluded beach located on the northwest shore of Maui, Hawaii. The beach gets its scary nickname from an old but long-gone building that was used for processing cattle during the plantation era. However, today it’s better known for its stunning natural beauty, clear waters, and excellent snorkeling.
Slaughterhouse Beach is situated near the Honolua Bay Marine Reserve, just off Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30) in the Kapalua area of West Maui. You’ll find it between mile markers 32 and 33. It’s about a 15-20 minute drive north from Auntie Snorkel Lahaina.
Parking and Access
There is a small parking area alongside Honoapiilani Highway, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak times. Arriving early is a good idea to secure a parking spot. Do not leave valuables in your car.
A long, relatively steep staircase is the only access to the beach.
A long stair case is the only access to the beach.
Facilities and Amenities
Slaughterhouse Beach is relatively undeveloped compared to some of Maui’s more popular beaches. There are no lifeguards on duty, and you won’t find facilities like restrooms or showers. Visitors should come prepared with their own supplies, including water and snacks.
What to Bring
Bring everything you’ll need for a relaxing and enjoyable time, but also only what you can carry down and up quite a lot of stairs! Auntie recommends your snorkel gear, floatation, an umbrella, and a backpack beach chair packed with your towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and snacks.

Snorkeling and Surf
Snorkelers can explore along the rocky edges of the bay, being careful to stay inside the bay to avoid strong currents. The underwater environment at Slaughterhouse Beach is a significant draw for snorkelers. The bay is home to vibrant coral reef teeming with marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling and diving. You can expect to see colorful coral formations, tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine creatures.
The middle of the bay is sandy, and excellent for light swimming when waters are calm, or surfing when there are manageable waves. The surf conditions at Slaughterhouse Beach are generally inconsistent and seasonal. While there may be occasional surf-able waves, they are not as reliable or consistent as you’ll find at dedicated surf spots on Maui. Waves break over a sandy middle of the bay, and can be best for body boards and soft top surfboards. Exercise extreme caution in surf conditions as currents can be strong and waves can be large and powerful.
Mokule’ia Bay is great for those seeking a more secluded and pristine beach experience.
Environment and Seasonal Variation
You’ll find rugged lava rock formations lining the beach, and ironwood trees all around the edges that provide some shade. The bay offers some shelter from trade winds and currents. Currents and winds can be very strong just outside the bay.
The beach is part of the Honolua Bay Marine Reserve, a protected area designed to preserve the local marine ecosystem. Visitors must practice responsible and sustainable tourism by not disturbing the marine life or the coral reefs.
The water conditions at Slaughterhouse Beach can vary depending on the season. During the summer months, the waters are typically calm and clear, making it ideal for snorkeling and swimming. However, in the winter, the surf can get quite rough, and the beach may not be suitable for swimming or snorkeling.
Remember to respect the natural beauty and environment of Slaughterhouse Beach by leaving no trace and following any posted rules and regulations. It’s a serene and picturesque spot that offers an escape from the crowds, making it a popular choice for those seeking a more tranquil beach experience on Maui.
About
Auntie Snorkel
Auntie Snorkel shop has been serving Maui’s fun seekers since 1985. We're the original South Maui Snorkel Shop. When I bought the shop 10 years ago from Auntie, we decided to keep the name. The name "Auntie" is a term of respect here in Hawaii. I'm living my dream. I get to meet awesome people from all over the world and share with them my love and knowledge of this magical island that I get to call home. We know all the spots. I have lived here since 2001. We're the true definition of a family owned and operated shop. I answer the phones and work the shop along with my family. When you shop with us you're supporting my ohana and for that I thank you!! Why go anywhere else? We're the friendliest, fastest, cheapest and our location is the most epic! Mahalo and Aloha”. ~Mark Noble (Owner & Maui Fun Expert)
Cali hooked me up with a great surfboard for 2 weeks for my Maui Kihei vacation. She was very knowledgeable about what surfboard would be good for me as a beginner surfer. I had an absolute blast surfing in the Cove with the 10 foot soft top board and thanks to Cali it did not cost me an arm and a leg either. Thanks a million Cali. I'll be back at Auntie Snorkel to rent again next year. Gil Medilek
