  • Ka’anapali Beach is situated in the Ka’anapali resort area on Maui’s west coast, adjacent to Whaler’s Village shopping and dining. Black Rock is just to the north of the Whaler’s Village area, next to the Sheraton resort. It is approximately a 10 minute drive north from Auntie Snorkel Lahaina.

Parking and Access

  • Parking for this area can be tricky, so come early! There are just over a dozen free parking spaces at the Ka’anapali Beach Access parking garage located beneath the Sheraton hotel. To reach it, simply follow Ka’anapali Parkway all the way until it reaches its end. Then make a left turn around the bend, and retrace your path. The second driveway on your right will lead you down into the parking garage.
  • If those spots are full, you can try an alternative Beach Access parking lot located about a quarter-mile down on the left side of the Whaler’s Village Shopping Center. There are only a few spots here, so you have to get lucky to get one.
  • If you’re planning to shop or dine at Whaler’s Village, you also have the option to park in their garage, and validate your parking. Once you’ve parked, access to the beach is easy, with well-maintained pathways for beachgoers. Black Rock is located to the right at the far northern end of the beach.
  • You may also park at the Sheraton for a fee. This is the closest parking to Black Rock.

What to Bring

Snorkeling and Surf

  • Ka’anapali Beach offers a wide range of water activities, including swimming, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and parasailing. The waters are typically calm, especially in the summer months, making it an excellent spot for beginners and families with children.
  • Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a), is a very popular spot for snorkeling. Here, you can encounter diverse marine life close to shore, including tropical fish and sea turtles. The best time to snorkel here is early morning, as this spot gets crowded from mid-morning through the day. Stay within the outermost point of Black Rock, as currents can be very strong just outside the rock. It’s always a good idea to snorkel with floatation and a friend!
  • One of the most iconic activities associated with Black Rock is cliff jumping. Hawaiians believe this spot to be a jumping point for spirits into the ancestral realm. So, please keep in mind the cultural significance and potential dangers involved with jumping off of Black Rock. It’s essential to approach the site with respect and exercise caution to adhere to safety guidelines if you choose to participate.
  • When surf is up, usually in the winter months, Ka’anapali Point is a fun spot to catch some waves by surfboard or boogie board. You’ll find this spot towards the southern end of Ka’anapali Beach, by the Hyatt resort.
